How to choose an embroidery machine?

Hi there!😉

I'm new here! I was looking for my question in other threads but haven't found any info. I have a plan to embroid my own design on hats as a present for my family and friends. As you can notice I do not have enough time to embroid before Christmas so decided to make them presents for another occasion. I'm planning to create something like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/278801033162556800/.

So, what I am really struggling with is buying the right embroidery machine. I already have some experience with a simple sewing machine. I use Janome 54 for more than 6 years. But I've never sewed on an embroidery machine. Obviously, I am a beginner in embroidery and I need something for a beginner. I tried to search. More or less reliable things that I found is this https://www.craftyhangouts.com/best-embroidery-machine-for-hats/. I also watched some videos on Youtube, some of which look pretty solid for me, for example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Je16ePAkQE

Finally, I stopped on Brother PE550D. So, what do you think about this? and if you have any suggestions feel free to share. I'll appreciate any advice.

Many thanks! 😘

I bought a Brother innovis 3500. I was originally looking at a smaller model with a much lower price point, but I was concerned that I might outgrow it too soon and be dissatisfied with the smaller-hoop limits. And while I was in the shop, I did consider the "next model up" but there was a BIG price point jump to go from the 3500 to the next one - do not know if it was 4500 or 4200 or what, but the price was almost double. The saleslady had a used one that had been traded in that I could have got for about 1000 more, but I am happy with the one I got. The biggest drawback I have is that my dealer is 110 miles away, so it is hard to just "pop in" when I have a question and I could not join any of the classes.

Most of the time, I use my 5x7 hoop, but when I need it, I am glad I do have the 6x10. If the model you are looking at has a  5x7 hoop, go for it. if you are limited to the 4x4 hoop, it might not keep you happy very long.
